Project Description:
In order to enhance the commercial and recreational role of Belize City Port located in Central America, the Government of Belize has launched this development project in year 2000. The project was awarded to the Joint Venture Hydromar – Jan de Nul on 25 April 2001.The project required the dredging of an access channel and a turning basin to the pier head at the Belize City Deep Water Port to -10m depth and then dredging the mouth of Haulover Creek to -4m depth to allow for the operation of a cruise ship berthing facility.
To carry on the above works, the contractor used his Cutter Suction Dredge “Kaerius” and his Trailer Hopper Suction Dredge “The Amerigo Vespucci” to remove around 2.5 million m3 of material consisting of soft, stiff clay, and rocks and deposited this material in a reclamation area west of the Port. Due to environmental constraints, all the dredged material had to be contained which required the construction of more than 3 km of bunds.
The works were completed on schedule and in full compliance with the specifications to the full satisfaction of the Client and the Engineer.
